CONFERÊNCIA
The reception of the work of Isaac Newton and Leonhard Euler among the French, 1780-1830

Abstract:
During the period treated here France was by far the dominant country for mathematics, starting with senior figures such as C. Bossut (1730-1814), G. Monge (1746-1818), P.S. Laplace (1749-1827) L. Carnot (1753-1823) and A.M. Legendre (1752-1833), and the Italian J.L. Lagrange (1736-1813) from 1787. In this lecture I shall review the presence of Newton's and Euler's theories in the calculus and mathematical physics in the progress of French work. Newton was there to a greater extent than might be imagined, including his optics as well as his mechanics. Euler faced greater opposition than might be imagined, with influential and competing views about both the calculus and mechanics coming from Lagrange. The were also new standpoints, especially with Fourier, Cauchy and Fresnel, that did not owe very much to any of the three giants.
