Na semana passada, a astrofísica espanhola Amaya Moro-Martín publicou uma carta-aberta ao Primeiro Ministro espanhol, onde, de uma forma original e incísiva, apontava uma série de razões para abandonar definitivamente o seu país, cansada da forma como a Espanha tratava a ciência.

Spain has plenty of shiny new research institutes but even in the good times, these bizarre medieval practices were there in the system, holding people back, pushing them to leave or creating barriers to them coming into the system.
Amaya's point about 'permeability' is key, I think - there are huge barriers to entry to Spanish science. And it seems that permeability is a key strength of the US and UK systems (though there are downsides to flexible scientific labour markets as well...).
